A Need for Green Data

At the CPI Global Summit in March, David Shea who is the Director, Office of Charge Card Management at GSA spoke about the ways industry innovations have advanced government payments and enabled savings of U.S. taxpayer dollars, but, as every thought leader should, he also challenged the industry to do more. Sure, the transaction data payment solution providers offer is great for spending insight and account management, but David Shea also said that there is an ongoing “need for green data,”

It’s an interesting concept that goes beyond shrinking the overall payment industry footprint with the elimination of paper checks and movement beyond plastic cards to virtual accounts and mobile payments. How can payment companies help the government and businesses track their carbon footprint, buy and exchange carbon offsets? The question demands that we consider new uses for our data compilation and reporting capabilities. It’s quite an inspiring train of thought. The payments industry supporting green efforts ….I have always been fascinated by the payments industry but the hope that we, as an industry, can support these efforts is inspiring .

SideNote: There are lots of companies currently seeking out and developing technologies to address environmental concerns. A blog of note for readers interested in this topic is www.ecogeek.org.
