Where Does Innovation Come From?
When the new company brand — Multi Service. Innovation Where it Matters. — was unveiled just a few weeks ago, questions surrounding the concept of innovation began to nag at me. Where does innovation come from? How can a company such as ours keep this ‘innovation thing’ going? So I turned to the great, all-knowing world wide web for the answer….
My search led me to the concept of ‘crowdsourcing’, in which companies turn to customers – crowds of them – to help determine the ‘next big thing’. Take Threadless, for instance, which asks its customers to design its products and even determine which of those products ultimately make it to market.
And I think Threadless has got it just right. Innovation isn’t often the result of some magical eureka moment. And it’s not the result of a C-Level exec with superior intelligence turning his wheels in a plush office. Innovation is the result of communication. It’s what happens when a company empowers its front lines to listen to customer challenges, but hear opportunities.
It’s certainly not the sexiest theory on innovation around. But, luckily, it is one that we can continue to put into a practice each day.
Thanks again, Google!
